Basic beef burger
Basic beef burger
Ingredients
For the burgers
- 750g beef mince
- 70g (1 cup) breadcrumbs, made from day-old bread
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh continental parsley
- 1 large brown onion, coarsely grated
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed
- 1 egg, lightly whisked
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp red Tabasco pepper sauce (optional), or to taste
- Salt & freshly ground black pepper
To serve
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 6 hamburger buns, split
- 150g cheddar, thinly sliced, to serve
- 3 (about 450g) ripe tomatoes, sliced, to serve
- Tomato sauce, to serve
- 6 iceberg lettuce leaves, shredded, to serve
Instructions
- 1
Place the beef mince, breadcrumbs, parsley, onion, garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco sauce in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Use your hands to mix until evenly combined.
- 2
Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions (you can use a 125ml/ 1/2-cup measuring cup if you like). Use your hands to shape each portion into a patty about 1.5cm thick.
- 3
Place the patties in a single layer on a tray lined with greaseproof paper. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to chill. (Chilling the patties will help hold them together when cooked. If you chill the patties for any longer, you will need to increase the cooking time slightly.)
30 min - 4
Heat half the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat. Add half the patties and cook for 4 minutes each side or until browned and cooked through. Transfer the patties to a plate, cover loosely with foil and set aside to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining oil and patties.
8 min - 5
Meanwhile, preheat grill on high. Place the hamburger buns, cut-side up, under preheated grill and toast for 1 minute, each side, or until golden (you may need to do this in batches, depending on your grill size). Leave the grill on.
2 min - 6
To serve, top the bottom halves of the toasted hamburger buns with the patties then the cheddar slices. Return the bottom bun halves under the grill for 1 minute or until the cheddar melts. Top each with the tomato slices, tomato sauce and shredded lettuce. Season with salt and pepper and cover with the hamburger bun tops. Serve immediately.
