Spaghetti Pie

Ingredients
For the Spaghetti Pie
- 1 pound dried spaghetti
- 2 tablespoons kosher salt, plus more for seasoning
- 1 pound sweet or hot Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup dry red wine
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving
- 1/2 pound broccoli florets, cut into small pieces
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
For the Topping
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- 1
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate or 10-inch cast-iron skillet.
- 2
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and 2 tablespoons salt and cook according to the package directions until al dente. Drain, rinse with cold water, and set aside.
- 3
In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
- 4
In the same skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, red pepper flakes (if using), oregano, basil, and black pepper and cook for 1 minute more.
- 5
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, red wine, and heavy cream. Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Stir in the 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese.
- 6
Add the broccoli to the sauce and cook until tender-crisp, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly.
- 7
In a large bowl, combine the cooked spaghetti, sausage, egg, parsley, and tomato-broccoli sauce. Toss until well combined.
- 8
Transfer the mixture to the prepared pie plate and press it down evenly.
- 9
In a small bowl, combine the panko, 1/2 cup Parmesan, and olive oil. Sprinkle evenly over the top of the spaghetti mixture.
- 10
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling.
- 11
Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, with additional Parmesan cheese if desired.
