Spiced Beef on Hummus
Ingredients
For the Hummus
- 1 1/2 cups canned chickpeas, rinsed and drained
- 3 tablespoons tahini
- 2 cloves garlic, peeled
- 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1/4 cup water
- 3/4 teaspoon salt, more to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
For the Beef
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon baharat, optional
- 2 to 4 tablespoons beef stock
- 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh parsley, for optional garnish
Instructions
- 1
Add chickpeas, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, water, salt, and pepper to a food processor. Blend until smooth. Adjust seasoning to taste.
- 2
In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, until no longer pink.
- 3
Add diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onion softens, about 5 minutes.
- 4
Stir in cumin, coriander, oregano, cayenne, black pepper, salt, and baharat if using. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- 5
Pour in 2 tablespoons beef stock and simmer until slightly thickened, 2–3 minutes. Add more stock if a looser texture is desired.
- 6
Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt or cayenne as needed.
- 7
Spread hummus on a shallow platter. Spoon the hot spiced beef mixture over the top.
- 8
Garnish with chopped parsley if desired. Serve immediately with warm pita bread.
